Greece is widely associated with the islands of the Aegean Sea, but its territory extends much farther east than many people realize. The country’s easternmost point is found on Strongyli Megistis, a small Greek islet located close to the southwestern coast of Turkey.

Strongyli Megistis lies in the eastern Mediterranean, southeast of Kastellorizo. It belongs to a small group of Greek islands positioned near the Turkish coastline, far from mainland Greece.
The islet is located at approximately 36.1 degrees north latitude and 29.6 degrees east longitude. Its position makes it the easternmost territory administered by Greece.
A Small Island With Geographic Importance
Strongyli is only about 1.5 kilometers long and reaches roughly 700 meters across at its widest point. Its total area is approximately 0.9 square kilometers.
The landscape is generally low and rocky, with Mediterranean shrubs covering much of the terrain. Despite its limited size, its location gives it considerable geographic and strategic importance.
Part of the Kastellorizo Island Group
Strongyli is administratively connected to the Municipality of Megisti, which also includes Kastellorizo and nearby islets such as Ro.
Kastellorizo is the largest and best-known island in the group. Strongyli sits several kilometers southeast of it, pushing Greece’s national territory farther east into the Mediterranean.
The Easternmost Building in Greece
A lighthouse stands on Strongyli and is often described as the easternmost building in Greece. The structure helps mark the island’s remote position and has historically supported maritime navigation in the surrounding waters.
The island also has a small military presence because of its location near Greece’s maritime frontier.
